A restaurant employee handbook can be an important resource in managing a restaurant. The handbook may provide useful information to employees throughout their employment as well as protect the restaurant from lawsuits (i.e. employee discrimination, health codes, attendance policies, etc.). Employee handbooks serve as a way to communicate what you, as a restaurant owner/manager, expect from your employees in terms of attendance, performance, presentation, and service.

Restaurant employee handbooks can be useful to owners, management and employees. The topics should cover all laws and regulations pertinent to the given jurisdiction in order for a restaurant to be compliant. Employees have the responsibility to follow the policies and guidelines set forth in the employee handbook just as much as restaurant owners and management staff have in enforcing and implementing them.

A restaurant employee handbook in general may help protect a restaurant from lawsuits. It may be advantageous to have an attorney read over the handbook to ensure that there are no gaps or holes in the policies. The handbook can become an important resource for employees to consult if they are unsure about something.

America’s restaurants are the nation’s second-largest private-sector employer and job creator—with nearly 13 million employees, or almost 10 percent of the U.S. workforce—a number projected to grow by 1.3 million positions in the next decade.

The restaurant industry is usually the nation’s second-largest creator of summer jobs – ranking behind the construction industry only. Eating and drinking places added 401,600 jobs (a 4.4 percent increase) during the 2010 summer season, 391,300 jobs (4.2 percent increase) during the 2009 summer season, and 352,900 jobs (3.7 percent increase) during the 2008 summer season.

Overall, every additional million dollars in restaurant sales generates 34 more jobs for the economy. More than nine in 10 restaurants (93 percent) are small businesses with less than 50 employees.

Founded in 1919, the National Restaurant Association is the leading business association for the restaurant industry, which comprises 960,000 restaurant and foodservice outlets and a workforce of nearly 13 million employees.

Catering often includes meals, snacks, fruits and beverages. Catering services are required by people, organizations or other groups hosting an event. The food may be cooked at the site where it is required or the caterer may choose to bring in previously prepared food. Catering is a significant part of the food service industry and has tough competition prevailing across all parts of the world. The cost for catering service can be based off of the number of persons attending the event or a lump sum amount for the event.

Catering can be one of the most rewarding businesses if you have a passion for it and are willing to work hard. It is a high income business if you beat competitors while maintaining quality of food and service. The demand for catering service is huge and has been increasing at a fast pace. However, the level of hard work required in starting and running a catering business are tremendous. It requires you to put in long working hours, often work on holidays, and deal with high pressure situations. If you can handle all these details then catering might be the right career choice.

Good health starts in the kitchen. Just take a good look around your kitchen, it is not hard to find essential ingredients which may or nay not be ideal for your health. The most central ingredients to our culinary dishes are cooking oil and salt. However, how many of us stop to think about the quality of the salt and cooking oil that we use?

Almost all dishes require cooking oil, whether it is to deep fry, saute, grill etc. A good cooking oil has to be unrefined and unhydrogenated as the processing results in loss of nutrients and increased saturated fatty acids. Saturated fatty acids are the culprit behind high cholesterol when we binge on our favorite foods.

In Asian cooking, it is also important to have a high smoking point for the oils we use in cooking. Stir-frying uses heat to sear food while tossing and stirring quickly, giving its fragrance which we typically associate with our char kuay teow. However, as the high heat may cause oils with low smoking points to change in structure and to produce free radicals and carcinogens, we have to be aware of the kinds of oils we use in our cooking.

The terms of harnessing energy from alternate sources of energy. While biofuel is in no way the long term answer to the energy needs of the world, in the next few decades it could act as the transitional energy sources between the current fossil fuels and the hydrogen fuel cell technology. Now a Minnesota company claims that it can produce biofuel from recycled beverage which is not fir for further use. Diversified Ethanol, a subsidiary of Greenbelt Resources Corporation, is focused on producing valuable renewable energy from waste substances that are produced by breweries and soft drink manufacturers. They claim that they can produce fuel from waste beverages and have succeeded in doing that to a large extent. Diversified Ethanol designs and builds small scale, modular ethanol plants that utilize existing waste as feed-stocks which can be converted to ethanol or biofuel. Using their proprietary technology, breweries, beverage recycling and food processing facilities can now convert their liquid waste into ethanol and a new revenue stream. A 5 million gallon per year plant is currently under construction for a major soda recycler in Southern California and is expected to be in operation by this summer. This is a nice little addition to the world biofuel supply and it uses a simple process as the basis of production.

You may think of the average vegetarian as being someone who is healthy and lean, but you may be surprised to learn that there are many who are true vegetarians that are overweight and even obese. You can live a great life full of health and well-being if you incorporate vegetarian cooking into your life, but you must make sure that you know what you are putting into your body and what could be problematic to your health. Not all things on a vegetarian diet are actually good for you.

Healthy vegetarian cooking starts with healthy cooking oils. This means avoiding the oils that have trans fats, as they can cause heart attack in the long run. Vegetable oil sounds like the perfect oil for a vegetarian diet, but that is not actually a good idea. Instead of this type of oil, you want to go with a non-animal and trans fat free oil like canola or olive oil. If you cook with these you can be assured of better health in the long run as long as you don’t overdo it.

You should also make sure that you are eating the right type of breads in your vegetarian cooking plans. Whole grain and whole wheat breads are far better for you than traditional white bread, and can help you stay healthy. These are going to digest slower and keep you fuller longer, and are great for your digestive system. You can also find muffins and other bread items with these ingredients that you can use in some of your vegetarian cooking creations.

Of course, you want to add a lot of vegetables to your vegetarian cooking. The trick is to steam them, or to cook them down just a little with low heat so that they still have some bite to them. If they are completely cooked down, you have just cooked most of the good stuff out of them. Green is good, but remember to add color to your dishes as well so you can get the best of everything.

Technically, sugar is okay in vegetarian cooking. However, that does not mean that you should be eating a lot of it. This is the main reason why some vegetarians are having trouble with their diets and their weight. As with anything else in life, too much anything that would be harmful to your health. Instead, think about adding more protein to your diet with beans and tofu, and cut the number of white foods and sugar that you add to your veggie dishes. Simply cut the meat is not enough to turn your health around. You must do it the right way by avoiding the foods you can think is okay but actually sends you two steps back.
